This week I read the short story collection Zombies versus Unicorns, edited by Justine Larbalestier and Holly Black. I already made a book trailer, but having finished the book I wanted to give you a rundown of the scores I gave both Team Zombie and Team Unicorn.
Team Unicorn had a strong showing. Meg Cabot’s Princess Prettypants blended the fairy tale idea of a unicorn (complete with a farting rainbows!) into a modern day setting. We also get to see inside a unicorn’s point of view with The Third Virgin by Kathleen Duey. But, unicorns are not all sunshine and rainbows. Dianna Peterfreund tells about the darker side of unicorns with The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn.
Team Zombie also brought their A-game! Bougainvillea, by Carrie Ryan, shows how people need to protect themselves from the dreaded zombie and what happens when you make the wrong zombie mad. Cassandra Clare shows how love can flourish in zombies in her story Cold Hands. However, the capstone story, Prom Night by Libba Bray, explores how a post-apocalyptic world would be with only teens and teenage zombies.
So, who do I side with? Well, after thinking the entire book that it would be Team Unicorn, overall the stories by Team Zombie are the ones I remember best and the ones I was the most engaged with. So, I guess I’m Team Zombie!
